Dear Ramapo Indian Hills Community:

Last week brought us the news of two terrible tragedies impacting school-age children.  On Thursday, May 17th, there was a horrific accident that claimed the lives of both a student and teacher from East Brook Middle School in Paramus.

On Friday we learned of yet another fatal school shooting that took place at Santa Fe High School in Texas. We continue to be disturbed by this streak of violence as our hearts break for the family and friends of all of those directly impacted by this event.

At this time, we want to express our deepest condolences to the entire East Brook Middle School and Santa Fe High School communities.  These events have shaken our region, and it is important for our community to come together, and grieve together. Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to all affected by these incredible tragedies.   If your child would like to speak to someone at school regarding his or her response to these events, please encourage him or her to do so.

Unfortunately, we find ourselves having to revisit the issue of violence in schools.  As parents, we know that when a shooting occurs in a school, it makes us all feel vulnerable and helpless.  I want you to know that over the past several years, the FLOW Police Departments and the Ramapo Indian Hills School District have worked in close coordination to improve the overall safety and security in our schools, and we continue to evaluate and update our crisis plans as necessary.

In most cases where violent acts occur in schools, there are early indicators of potential trouble.  With that in mind, it is critical to look out for the well-being of each other, and so we would stress two main ideas:  First, talk with your children about their safety. If they have concerns they should share them with an adult. Second, if you as a parent hear something from your children, or their friends, contact the school and/or the police and report it. We are committed to assessing and investigating any and all concerns. Put simply, if you see or hear something, say something.
