Standardized Testing with Accommodations

Dear Parents:

As you may know, if your child is considering attending college, he or she may be required to take the SAT and/or the ACT exams for admission.  College Board (PSAT, SAT, AP) and ACT may approve testing accommodations for students with documented educational disabilities and current 504 or medical plans.

College Board and ACT are private testing companies that have strict criteria for determining eligibility for testing accommodations and employ professionals to make such determinations for them.  Each company will review your child’s plan and evaluation profile and will determine which, if any, accommodations they will provide for your child.

Your portion of the process of applying for accommodations on these exams is outlined below.  The documentation on file with your child’s school-based plan may need to be used to support the request.  If the documentation on file is not sufficient, or for students who require extensive accommodations or who have been classified due to medical or emotional conditions, it is possible that additional and/or updated documentation will be needed.  Please plan accordingly when applying so as to allow sufficient time for obtaining documentation, testing, doctors’ visits, etc., in order to complete the process prior to exam registration deadlines.

College Board (PSAT, SAT, AP):

1. Apply for accommodations:  Applications for accommodations for College Board exams must be submitted prior to registration for testing.  The Consent Form for Testing Accommodations Requests must be filled out and returned before the district can apply for accommodations on behalf of your child.  Please note that in cases where additional documentation is required, College Board may take up to ten weeks to process and review the application.

2.  Register:  Once a student is approved for accommodations, they will receive a unique SSD number (Services for Students with Disabilities) which carries their approved accommodations with it.  Entering this number when prompted during registration will automatically provide them with their pre-approved accommodations.

ACT:

1.  Register:  During registration, please be sure to indicate the need for accommodations and type of accommodations that will be requested (see National vs. Special ACT Testing Reference Guide for more information).

2.  Apply for Accommodations:  Upon completion of your registration, you will receive an email with instructions on how to work with your school to submit a request. Forward this email along with the Consent Form for Testing Accommodations Requests if there is not already a signed consent form on file for your child. This email initiates the process.
